Curiosities and superstition – the mystery animals of Suffolk

The ancient folklore of the county of Suffolk is populated with many fantasy creatures – wildmen on display in Suffolk’s churches, mermaids in local pools and ponds, the hellhound Black Shuck. But there are also some more plausible curiosities among the wildlife of 21st century Suffolk. There have been many reports of big cats seen across the county – black leopards, pumas, lynxes and something described as a gigantic feral domestic cat.

Journalist Matt Salusbury has documented over 200 reports of big cats in Suffolk. And yes, brief footage of a big cat caught on camera in Suffolk will be shown.

Matt Salusbury is a journalist, Chair of the trustees of Dunwich Museum and BBC Radio Suffolk’s big cat expert. He’s the author of Mystery Animals of Suffolk (Leiston Press, 2023).
