Treasures of the Abbey of St Edmund in Moyse’s Hall Museum

Moyse’s Hall is home to several objects associated with the Abbey of St Edmund, including a portion of Abbot Samson’s crozier, a painted panel depicting a curious stained glass window, a sculpture depicting the punishment of Simon Magus, coins from Bury’s monastic mint, and a copy of the Bury St Edmunds Chronicle. These items are of special importance since so few material remains of the Abbey survive.

This talk will explore the history of the medieval and Abbey and town through some of these treasures, with a particular focus on the painted panel depicting the Cellarer’s window and the Moyse’s Hall copy of the Bury St Edmunds Chronicle. The talk will explore the significance of this rare manuscript for understanding the Abbey’s contentious relationship with the town of Bury St Edmunds.

A short Q&A will follow
