Join us as at Moyse’s Hall Museum as we explore one of the most famous aspects of St Edmund’s story…

Of all the animals that called early medieval England home, none was so feared as the wolf. And yet even in death, his head separated from his body, Edmund managed to do the impossible: he tamed one.

Stories about this miraculous event circulated and swirled throughout the Middle Ages, incorporating mythologies from Edmund's pagan forebears, Christian associations of the wolf with the devil, and even, perhaps, an ancient Roman superstition that wolves could steal a person's speech.

Dr Elizabeth Marshall will cast a close eye over Edmund’s lupine legacy and her book, Wolves in Beowulf and Other Old English Texts, was published in 2022.
