Superstition Takes Centre Stage at Moyse's Hall

Wednesday 8 January 2025

This spring, Moyse's Hall Museum invites visitors to journey into the mysterious and mystical with Superstition: Strange Wonders and Curiosities, a captivating display delving into folklore, witchcraft, and age-old beliefs.

Running from Saturday 15 February until Sunday 6 April, the exhibition will draw on treasures from the museum’s own collection supported with artefacts from other institutions and private collectors.

Highlights will include the ghostly Black Shuck of East Anglia, 17th Century ritualistic artefacts, new ‘witchcraft’ acquisitions and donations, 19th Century oddities, ancient relics, and much more telling the story of superstition throughout the ages.

The exhibition coincides with the upcoming production of A Tryal of Witches at the Theatre Royal in March, a performance inspired by the infamous Bury St Edmunds’ witch trials in the 1600’s.

To further explore the themes of folklore, witchcraft, and local legends, Moyse’s Hall is also hosting an engaging series of talks that promise to bring these subjects to life.

Don’t miss Curiosities and Superstition – the Mystery animals of Suffolk with journalist Matt Salusbury, a unique talk by Dr Francis Young on Suffolk Folklore. Or an evening with Dr Tabitha Stanmore as she steps into the supernatural world of sixteenth and seventeenth century England with Spellcraft and Witchcraft and Magic, Oh My!
