This spring, Moyse’s Hall Museum invites you to explore Faces, a new exhibition showcasing a remarkable portrait collection—bringing together familiar favourites and works unseen for generations—to celebrate the people behind the pictures.
Spanning centuries and styles, the exhibition will feature abstract works, traditional portraiture, delicate miniatures, humorous sketchbooks and historic photographs. By viewing these works through a human lens, we aim to bridge historical distance and reveal the personal stories behind each face.
Highlights include stepping into the Cullum family’s study through portraits by artists such as Sir Peter Lely; discovering Sophie Collett’s finely detailed miniatures; enjoying Rose Mead’s joyful celebrations of people; encountering unnamed sitters in intimate Victorian portraits; tracing the evolving style of Roy Durrant; and exploring identity through the work of emerging artists from West Suffolk College. Visitors are also invited to spend time with works by Mary Beale.
The exhibition has been thoughtfully designed to encourage slow looking, with spaces to sit, pause and reflect throughout. Pocket Portrait Packs are available to purchase, offering creative prompts and materials to inspire your own artistic response—shaped by the artworks and by you.
There’s plenty for visitors of all ages to enjoy, including photo opportunities, drawing spaces, a free Faces trail, and craft sessions planned for the Easter holidays.
Dates: Saturday 14 March – Sunday 10 May
