Event details

An evening lecture with Diana Dethloff FSA, Lecturer in 16thc & 17thc British painting in the History of Art Department, University College London.

Peter Lely (1618 – 1680), the Dutch-born painter to Charles II, enjoyed a professional relationship and personal friendship with Mary Beale and her husband Charles over a number of decades.

As a colourman Charles Beale supplied Lely with pigments, while Mary was allowed (very unusually) to watch Lely paint, and on a number of occasions borrowed Lely’s portraits to take home to copy. This lecture will consider the connections between Lely and the Beales and what this tells us about Lely’s method of working and the relationship between artists and artists’s studios during the Restoration period.
